The website TranscriptionExpress.com specializes in providing transcripts and offers work-at-home jobs. The Arizona-based company was founded in 1995 by Darren and Terry Hurst. If you visit the site, you’ll notice they only offer services to the government, legal and corporate sectors.

There’s an approval process though. You won’t be accepted immediately since there’s an initial screening for all the TEI applicants. The dashboard on the website suggests you get up to 24 hours to transcribe every audio file which can be downloaded straight to your computer.

TEI website claims all their users are based in the US which suggests the platform is open only to people living in the USA. As you may have guessed by now, you need excellent typing skills for the job and an internet connection that won’t fail you.

Upon approval, you will be required to pass a background check (one-time $70 fee). A breach of contract will result in a $250 penalty which is both a good and a bad thing. This ensures the quality of applications as there won’t be any tire kickers trying to compete with you.

Once your application goes through and is successful, be ready to set aside a few hours each day, up to 5 days per week. The initial screening requires you to be able to type at least 60 WPM (words per minute) with high accuracy.

Things We Liked

• You can get transcripts done from home or any other location. If you’re up for some training and work, this may be it.
• The company has decent reviews on platforms like Indeed and Glassdoor. There are critical reviews too, but the positive ones outnumber them.
• Recognized by Better Business Bureau (BBB). They also have an A+ rating from them.
• Since this is not a usual day job, you can set your own hours and work when you ‘feel like it.’

Things We Didn’t Like

• Income is far from being considered life-changing. You only get paid once for trading your time; you can make up to $1.4 per transcribed page with the platform.
• As a part of a background check, you’re expected to make a one-time $70 payment which is non-refundable.
• If you breach your contract in mid, you’d owe the company $250 one-time which isn’t great. Quitting on them certainly won’t be fun.

Final Words – Is Transcription Express a Scam?

No, Transcription Express is not a scam. The organization has been in business for more than two decades. Besides this, they also have an A+ grade from BBB which is a rarity.

However, as mentioned before you need to do a quick background check (one-time $70 fee) during your application. Once you’re shortlisted and have work, it will cost you $250 if you decide to give up (for insert your own reason).

Even if you get hired, it may/may not be worth it even if they are legit. Making $1.39 per completed page doesn’t look like a lot of money, and if you trade up to 15-20 min of your time for it, it’s just not worth it. There are better options if you know where to look.
